The objective of this study is to assess the skills and compensation practices among regular and associate members of the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, with the overall goal of developing a Human Resource Development Roadmap for the mining industry. Using pen-and-paper survey method and validation interviews with HR representatives of mining companies, information regarding several aspects of the industry was revealed. The skills in-demand, compensation and benefits, adherence to labor standards found in the Labor Code, and the outlook of the industry were all extracted from the data gathered through the survey. Results have shown the industry’s relevance to the overall supply chain. In general, the mining industry is also compliant with labor standards, and has generous compensation and benefits as compared to other industries. While there were mixed responses in terms of employment prospects for the next five years, it was acknowledged that various HR strategies such as the identification of common and core competencies for all mining-related occupations, industry tie-ups with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, and Professional Regulations Commission, Information and Education Communication campaign on mining professions, would be helpful in providing a good outlook for the mining industry. Other strategies such as the implementation of greener mining processes for the development of green jobs, and the investment for the expansion of the manufacturing sector, were also recommended.
