ILS studies on mine safety and working conditions near completion

Manila – The Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) researches titled, “A Study on Mine Safety and Working Conditions in the Metallic and Non-Metallic Small-Scale Mining Sector in the Philippines,” and “An In-depth Study on Mine Safety and Working Conditions in Large Scale Mining Sector in the Philippines,” are on its final leg of research field work and are slated to be completed by the first week of September this year.

Authored by Ms. Miraluna Tacadao and Ms. Malorie Joy O. Mones of the Workers Welfare Research Division (WWRD), the researches aim to examine the existing policies and regulations that govern mine safety and analyze the working conditions of those engaged in the industry focusing on both the small and large-scale metallic and non-metallic mining in the Philippines.

The research team has completed field work on the following study areas identified for the small-scale mining study: three areas in Benguet Province, two areas in Camarines Norte for the Luzon region, and one area each for the provinces of South Cotabato and Agusan del Sur for the Mindanao region. Additional field work is scheduled to be conducted in the two remaining companies identified for large-scale mining.

ILS partnered with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the study on small-scale mining, while the study on large-scale mining is undertaken in coordination with the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC), an attached agency of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

The preliminary results will be presented to the stakeholder in a conference scheduled by the 3rd week of September. The full results of the study will be presented to the public during the 6th DOLE Research Conference by December.
