Taguig City – Institute for Labor Studies’ researchers Ms. Chelsea Nicole P. Pineda and Mr. Marvin G. Cabangunay presented the 2024 ILS Working Paper titled “Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Labor Market” at the 2024 Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Research Conference on 11 December at the Tandang Sora Hall, TESDA Women’s Center, Taguig City.
With a theme “Data-Driven & Dynamic TVET System: Producing Work-Ready and Future-Ready TVET Graduates,” the conference provided a platform for TVET professionals and stakeholders to share insights, foster dialogue, and strengthen strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing the country’s TVET ecosystem.
In their presentation, Pineda and Cabangunay underscored the transformative impact of AI in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (FiRe), where automation and advanced technologies are reshaping industries, job roles, and workforce demands. The study highlights the urgent need for upskilling and reskilling programs to address evolving labor market requirements, while advocating for Industry-Academe-Government collaboration to support the demand of AI-related skilling opportunities such as data science and analytics.
“Among the study's findings is the aspiration of respondents to pursue better employment opportunities by leveraging AI expertise, with many seeking both formal and freelance work to advance their careers. That is why one of our policy recommendations is for the government to fast-track the development of training regulations and competency standards for AI-related skills to ensure workers are adequately prepared for an AI-driven workplace. The study also recommends enhancing accessibility to AI-related training programs nationwide, facilitated through partnerships with TESDA, DICT, AAP, and other key stakeholders,” Pineda said.
The study was first presented to the public during the 13th DOLE Research Conference in Quezon City, and was attended by representatives from the government agencies, tripartite partners, research institutions, academe, industry leaders, and other key stakeholders, both in person and online.
The full paper of the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Labor Market, along with other 2024 ILS Working Papers, will be available on the ILS website by end of December 2024.
