On June 27-28, 2018, the Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) conducted a workshop on “Data Story Telling” at the iLearn conference room, Intramuros, Manila.

ILS resource person Carl Rookie Q. Daquio explained that the said technical learning session aimed to provide the participants with the basic principles and elements of good visualization design to become proficients data story teller.

The participants were composed of the technical staff from both the Institute and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) offices who are involved in employment planning and policy support. They were guided on the following: a) to detect and understand the stories within the datasets and extract insights from the data; b) to effectively present data visually to enhance comprehension of findings and insights; and c) to apply data visualization best practices to their work, including choosing the right chart type for the appropriate situation, as well as avoiding visualization techniques that can misled an audience or the public.

 “It is always a wonderful challenge for us to communicate the analyzed data that we have to our DOLE senior officials in a simpler and easy-to-understand form to help create an impact among our policy makers,” said ILS Acting Executive Director Ahmma Charisma Lobrin-Satumba to welcome the participants to the event.
