Details

The results of the October 2016 LFS round reported a labor force participation rate of 63.6% out of the 68.734 million population 15 years old and over. This is equivalent to about 43.704 million economically active population comprising either employed or unemployed persons. More so, the employment rate was reported at 95.3% and the unemployment rate at 4.7%. The underemployment rate was estimated at 18.0%. It should be noted that the current results are not comparable with the previous year’s due to a break in the data series following the adoption of the 2013 Master Sample for household-based surveys starting the April 2016 round.

The results of the July 2016 LFS round reported a labor force participation rate of 63.3% out of the 68.436 million population 15 years old and over. This is equivalent to about 43.309 million economically active population comprising either employed or unemployed persons. More so, the employment rate was reported at 94.6% and the unemployment rate at 5.4%. The underemployment rate was estimated at 17.3%. It is difficult to compare the current results to that of the previous year due to a break in the data series following the adoption of the 2013 Master Sample for household-based surveys starting the April 2016 round.

The results of the April 2016 LFS round reported a labor force participation rate of 63.63% out of the 66.805 million population of 15 years old and over. This is equivalent to about 42.510 million economically active population comprising either the employed or unemployed persons. More so, the employment rate was reported at 93.9% and the unemployment rate, 6.1%. The underemployment rate was estimated at 18.4%. This round is the start of a break in the data series following the adoption of the 2013 Master Sample for household-based surveys and hence results are not comparable to the previous year.

Details

Overall employment situation: The results of the January 2016 LFS1 round indicated that decent work gains have been achieved particularly in terms of generating quality employment. Employment expanded by 2.0% (+752,000), year-on-year, accompanied by a decline in both the unemployment rate (5.8% from 6.6%) and part-time employment by 12.8% (12.506 million from 14.335 million). Further, vulnerable employment rate went down considerably to 33.4% from 39.4%. In contrast, underemployment rate notably went up to 19.7% from 17.9%, year-on-year.
