ILS concludes 2022 Advocacy Webinar Series with a focus on senior citizen employment

As the last installment of the ILS Advocacy Webinar Series for 2022, the Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) successfully conducted the webinar, “No Shelf Life: Employment and Income Opportunities for Senior Citizens” last December 19, and as hosted by Ms. Lara Fameronag Labor and Employment Officer II, from the Advocacy and Publications Division.

Republic Act 9994 is a new amendment appending privileges and benefits to the existing Republic Act 7432. The Act maximizes the contribution of senior citizens in nation building as it grants additional benefits and special purposes to the vulnerable sectors.

The City Council of Manila implemented an ordinance in the light of the said law. Presented in the webinar by the OIC-Director of Public Employment Service Office – City of Manila, Fernan Bermejo, Ordinance No. 8598, also known as “An Ordinance Mandating Fast Food Corporations to Provide Temporary Employment to Qualified Senior Citizens, Differently-Abled and Persons with Disability Residents of the City of Manila,” was approved and signed by former City Mayor Francisco Domagoso.

The webinar facilitated discussion on the Philippines' guiding principles for ensuring that elderly citizens' productivity transcends the so-called "twilight years” and for dispelling the myth that "retirement" signifies the end of life's productivity.
